Lamborghini returns to International GT Open for title assault with VS Racing

1 марта 2021

After a year away from the championship in 2020, Lamborghini Squadra Corse will return to International GT Open this season courtesy of a two-car effort from VS Racing.

The team, which is based in Forli and run by former Grand Prix driver Vincenzo Sospiri, will field a pair of Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evos, with Frederick Schandorff and Michele Beretta joining forces in the #63 car.

Belgian driver Baptiste Moulin is the third confirmed driver for the 2021 season, with his team-mate in the #19 car to be announced in due course.

Lamborghini GT3 Junior Schandorff has been a key member of Squadra Corse’s Young Driver Programme, having won the coveted Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Final in 2019. The Dane also has a GT Open title to his name as well, triumphing in the Pro-Am class the same year with VS Racing. Last season, Schandorff clinched the GT World Challenge Europe Silver Cup title alongside Barwell Motorsport team-mates Alex MacDowall and Patrick Kujala.

Speaking about the new season, Schandorff said: “It’s great to be able to confirm my 2021 programme and announce that I will again be running with VSR in the International GT Open – a series where we have both tasted victory in the past. I must thank my sponsor – PR Electronics – as well as Lamborghini Squadra Corse and PPM for their support in putting this exciting programme together.”

Schandorff’s partner in the #63, Beretta, is another driver with an excellent resume, having won the Italian Super GT3 Championship with Lamborghini in 2017. The Italian also finished third in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America championship in 2017 before recording third in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Silver Cup standings with Barwell Motorsport the following year.

“I’m very happy to return to racing with Lamborghini and with Vincenzo – with whom I started in single-seaters many years ago,” explained Beretta. “I would like to thank him and also Giorgio Sanna for this opportunity and for giving me the chance to aim for the title. Now we are looking forward to some testing in preparation for the start of the season!”

For Moulin, the target is to continue his apprenticeship within the Lamborghini fold, having impressed during his first season with the Sant’Agata Bolognese firm last season. He competed with FFF Racing in GT World Challenge Endurance Cup, but now approaches GT Open with renewed confidence.

“I’m really excited about driving with VSR and Lamborghini in the GT Open this year,” said Moulin. “This is a great opportunity for me, and we have clear goals from this programme which we have set together. I can’t wait to get started - go VSR and go Lamborghini!”

Lamborghini has enjoyed plenty of success in GT Open over the past four seasons, famously winning the overall Drivers and Teams’ titles with Emil Frey Racing and securing the Pro-Am crown with VS Racing.
The previous season, VS Racing also picked up the Am title at its first attempt in GT Open, with Andrzej Lewandowski and Giulio Borlenghi.
