Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America launches season at historic Road America

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, 8 August 2020 – The Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America championship finally took the green flag on its 2020 calendar, following a four-month delay due to the global pandemic. Appropriately, the historic and popular Road America circuit was the setting for a pair of exciting races to start the campaign.

A total of 12 entries in the four classes competed in the 50-minute races on the 14-turn, 4.048-mile natural-terrain road course, one race each on Friday and Saturday. Three classes saw the same entry win both rounds while the top Pro class saw a spirited battle with different winners each day.

Madison Snow and Bryan Sellers took the overall and Pro class win on Friday in the No. 16 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO, ahead of the No. 6 US RaceTronics, Lamborghini Beverly Hills Lamborghini driven by Jacob Eidson and Steven Aghakhani. The following day, the roles were reversed with Eidson and Aghakhani reaching the top step of the podium while Snow and Sellers finished second.

The No. 16 won Race 1 despite experiencing electrical issues that caused it to sporadically lose power.

“Without Madison’s effort in the opening stint, it would have been a lot more difficult,” Sellers said. “He handed it over with a four-second gap. From there it was kind of managing the gap, but we had a problem with the electronics in the car. The car kept shutting off, so I had no power steering, no power half the time.

“It was difficult, but the car was really good when it was all on,” Sellers added. “We just had to make the most of it.”

The No. 16 took the checkered flag first again in Race 2, but a five-second post-race penalty assessed for Sellers jumping out of line early at the race start handed the victory to the No. 6. Aghakhani knew of the looming penalty when he jumped into the car to finish the race, and the 17-year-old sensation was able to trim a six-second deficit in half to easily secure the win once the No. 16’s punishment was imposed.

“My anxiety level was through the roof, but I had a lot of faith in Steven,” said Eidson, the elder statesman of the team at age 25. “His driving ability, especially in that stint, was absolutely incredible. I’m so happy for him, so happy for the team. The competition was really fierce out there. They definitely did not make it easy, but we put our heads down and Steven brought it home.”

Change Racing fielded the winners in the other three categories. Corey Lewis and McKay Snow triumphed both days in ProAm, driving the No. 63 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán. Victor Gomez IV won both Am events in the No. 29 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán. Randy Sellari earned two victories in LB Cup in the No. 03 Change Racing, Lamborghini Charlotte Huracán.

“To be back here on the top step of the podium, it always feels great,” Lewis said of the dual ProAm wins. “We’re thinking points already for the championship. I know that’s our end-all goal, to get Change Racing and Lamborghini Charlotte that team championship at the end of the year. I’m already thinking long haul and I know McKay’s doing the same.”

Gomez is new to Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America competition and new to Change Racing. He said he and the team are still getting to know each other.

“We’re still in the dating stages,” Gomez said. “They’re learning stuff about me; I’m learning stuff about them. We keep learning, we keep getting faster. This is only like my third or fourth time in the car, so I feel pretty strong and I’m open to learning and getting better each weekend.”

Sellari cruised to wins in LB Cup by comfortable margins, but the heat inside the car and absence of being in a race car for so long took its toll. He was drained physically following the Race 2 win.

“That run was tough,” Sellari said after Race 2. “Around the nine-minute mark, the heat overtook me. I was struggling those last four or five minutes. I really struggled. I need to change my exercise regimen. I’m 61, so I’m going at it with these people that are half my age. It was a good run again. I had another good car and I love this track.”

The Road America opening round was the first of five on the 2020 North America schedule.
